The North Mallorca Branch of the Calvia Lions held its second May Fira for the benefit of victims of domestic violence on Sunday, May 13 at the Claustre in Pollensa. It was a great success! The stalls were constantly crowded, selling homemade food and jams, a giant paella, beer, wine, and soft drinks, bric a brac, and books, as people enjoyed the music of professional musicians on the stage. Best of all, it was an inclusive community event, where local Mallorquins, and residents of every nationality (British, American, German, French, Japanese, and others), and tourists from around the world mingled and enjoyed what eventually turned into a beautiful sunny day!

Among the highlights of the Fira included the Xeremiers Orats, who played traditional Mallorquin folk music as they marched from Club Pollensa to the Claustre, where the mayor of Pollensa cut the ribbon and opened the fira.

The heroes of KartForce, British veterans who were injured in active duty, were introduced, having just finished a gruelling 24-hour kart race on the island, which was sponsored by the Lions.

The Aires de la Cala ball de bot dancers, performed and the fabulous Guillermo and the Fat Cats Reunion 2018 generously donated their time to perform jazz and popular hits.

Local children’s drawings of their families, based on the theme “Families come in all shapes and sizes” were displayed, and the best drawings were chosen to win wonderful prizes.

Local Pollensa poets and storytellers gave a moving reading on the theme of preventing domestic violence.

Charles of English Radio Pollensa opened his live studio to give fira-goers a glimpse of a working radio station, and took requests.

IBdona brought their van and did a terrific job raising awareness of the very serious issue of domestic violence on Mallorca.

Onit, the Pollensa non-profit that does so much good in the north of the island, played a major role on the day and Daniel and his team were absolutely essential to the success of the Fira.

Everyone had a wonderful time while knowing they were contributing to a worthy cause!
